Time After Time

Time After Time

Lori Lieberman

Time after time he wondered why
Out of the blue she said good-bye
He shook his head, he smiled and said
“It’s only for a while”, but then
The days they turned into lonely nights
The cases of beer and T.V. guides
“It’s only make believe”, he said, and
“She’ll come back to me”, he said

But did you say you loved her?
No, I never told her so
Did you say you need her?
Well, she surely must have known

And time after time as time goes by
All he can do is sit and cry
His friends would try to make him see
His love is a futility

But he believes in miracles and water from a stone
And never was she so in love
And never so alone

And night after night she cries at the dark
She yells at the moon and screams at the stars
“There are times when I miss him so
And I wait by the telephone
He doesn’t care, or he’d have let me know
It’s just as well I had the nerve to go”

And night after night he cries at the dark
He yells at the moon and he screams at the stars
“I’ve had enough of this foolish act,
And enough of this time has passed
As for love, she was my first and last
I would have told her if she’d only asked”
